Growth Mindset Explained: Helping Children Embrace Challenges
Children do not always find challenges easy. A difficult puzzle, a new skill, or a mistake can sometimes make them want to give up. But learning to see challenges as opportunities rather than obstacles can change the way children approach learning.
This is where a growth mindset comes in.
A growth mindset is the belief that abilities can develop through effort, practice, learning, and trying again. At Mirai Minds, we encourage children to approach challenges with curiosity and confidence instead of being afraid of getting something wrong.
What Is a Growth Mindset?
Children with a growth mindset understand that they may not be able to do something yet, but that does not mean they never will.
For example, instead of saying, “I can’t solve this,” a child can learn to think, “I can’t solve this yet. What can I try next?”
This small change in thinking can encourage children to stay engaged when something feels difficult.
Help Children See Mistakes as Learning
Mistakes are a natural part of learning. When children make a mistake, it can be tempting to immediately correct them or give them the answer.
Instead, encourage them to think about what happened.
Ask questions such as:
“What could you try differently?”
“What did you learn from that attempt?”
“What might work next?”
These questions help children focus on the learning process rather than simply whether they were right or wrong.
Praise Effort and Strategies
Instead of focusing only on results, recognise the effort and strategies children use.
For example, say:
“You kept trying even when it was difficult.”
or
“I like how you tried a different way to solve the problem.”
This helps children understand that persistence, practice, and problem-solving are valuable parts of learning.
Give Children Opportunities to Take on Challenges
Children need opportunities to experience manageable challenges. Building something, solving a puzzle, completing a creative project, experimenting with materials, or learning a new skill can all encourage them to practise persistence.
At Mirai Minds, hands-on learning gives children opportunities to explore ideas, make decisions, test solutions, and learn from what happens.
Growth Happens Through Trying
Developing a growth mindset in children does not mean expecting them to enjoy every challenge. It means helping them understand that difficulty is often part of learning.
When children learn to say “I can try another way” instead of “I can’t do it,” they begin to approach challenges with greater confidence and resilience.
At Mirai Minds, we believe every challenge can become an opportunity to learn, explore, and grow.
Children do not need to know everything today. They just need to believe they can keep learning.
